Providencia is in the Santiago Metropolitan Region, the capital region, home to around 40% of Chileans: Greater Santiago spreads across a valley at the foot of the Andes, with hot, dry summers and cold winter mornings, a Metro and Red bus network paid with the bip! card, neighbourhoods such as Lastarria, Bellavista and Barrio Italia, and ski resorts little more than an hour away. Providencia mixes offices, shops and residential life along Avenida Providencia and Metro Line 1, with Barrio Italia, part of Bellavista and the Gran Torre Santiago among its landmarks. Chilean addresses give the street and number first, sometimes with the flat ("depto.") or office ("of."), followed by the comuna, as in "Av. Providencia 1234, depto. 501, Providencia"; the map link on this page shows the exact spot.
