Chillán Viejo is in the Ñuble Region, in central Chile, with a Mediterranean climate of dry summers and winter rain: a land of farming valleys and vineyards, of towns with huaso (Chilean cowboy) and rodeo traditions, and of a coastline whose beach towns fill up in January and February. Ñuble is Chile's youngest region, created in 2018: Chillán is its capital, known for its craft market and its longaniza sausages, the Nevados de Chillán offer snow and hot springs in the Andes, and the Itata Valley is one of the oldest wine areas in the country.
