Iquique is in the Tarapacá Region, in the Norte Grande, a desert land where it almost never rains, with morning coastal fog (camanchaca), beaches that are mild all year, copper mining as the great economic engine and, inland, the altiplano and Andean villages, where altitude and sun call for precautions. Iquique, capital of Tarapacá, combines its free zone, Cavancha beach, surfing and paragliding, and lies close to the Humberstone and Santa Laura saltpetre works, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Chilean addresses give the street and number first, sometimes with the flat ("depto.") or office ("of."), followed by the comuna, as in "Av. Providencia 1234, depto. 501, Providencia"; the map link on this page shows the exact spot.
