Puerto Montt is in the Los Lagos Region, in southern Chile, where it rains for much of the year and the landscape is one of forests, rivers, lakes and volcanoes, with Mapuche heritage and that of the German settlers, university and service towns and summer destinations by the lakes, so always come prepared for rain. Puerto Montt, capital of Los Lagos, is the great service centre of the south: Angelmó brings together crafts and seafood eateries, and the Carretera Austral and southbound ferries start here. Chilean addresses give the street and number first, sometimes with the flat ("depto.") or office ("of."), followed by the comuna, as in "Av. Providencia 1234, depto. 501, Providencia"; the map link on this page shows the exact spot.
